GGEP Schools Water Environmental Education Programme

Imagine being able to explore a pristine catchment and the excitement of kids being able to discover for themselves the variety of water animal life to be found in clear streams? Well in Giba Gorge, the upper Highway schools now have such an outdoor water classroom right on their doorstep!

The GGEP is working hard on developing a range of water environmental education opportunities for senior primary and high schools that will allow kids from all walks of life into a catchment and get their hands wet.

They will be able to learn how to recognize a healthy stream. They will be able to discover for themselves and identify macroinvertbrates, the animal life, in the streams that flow down the Giba catchment. They will also be able to assess the quality of the stream water by doing simple analysis such as testing the water for pH, oxygen and nitrates levels. They can also learn about other aspects of the environment as they scan the stream banks for vegetation cover and other signs of healthy habitats.

Best of all the kids learn while having lots of fun in a safe and pristine environment that’s not more than three kilometers from the Hillcrest centre.

GGEP hopes to have this water environmental programme available towards the end of July. It’s the intention to make most of these programmes curriculum based learning experiences.
