Alien Plants & Control

One of the greatest threats to the long-term integrity of Giba Gorge’s natural ecosystems is the proliferation of alien invasive plant species. Our dedicated team of conservation staff are using a significant amount of their time in trying to get this problem under control.

Some of the species that have invaded the gorge come from plants in residential gardens. Believe it or not but some of these are still available from nurseries – this is illegal. In order to help our efforts in getting Giba Gorge as indigenous as possible we would like to ask all landowners to do their part in eradicating alien invasive plants in their gardens.

In order to identify which alien plants you have, please search  through our photo gallery, click on the recognized plant and open the attached pdf to get more information on this plant and how it can be controlled. Before you do this you should read through the general principles of alien plant control, especially the use of herbicides and the potential harm this can cause. If you intend using herbicides we recommend you contact our management staff for up-to-date applicators and methods.
