Conservation

Why are the natural areas of Giba so unique and important? For background info on the different ecosystems in Giba, including the rare and endangered Sandstone Sourveld grasslands, visit the Ecosystems section.

The core driver of the Giba Gorge Environmental Precinct is the need for conservation management interventions. For some background on why conservation is necessary in Giba and what will happen if we don’t manage this area, visit (link to Background).

One of the biggest threats to the integrity of the natural systems in Giba is the invasion of alien plant species. The only way to tackle this problem is for all landowners to get involved in doing their bit to ensure that none of these occur on their properties. The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa KZN Region, has kindly donated extracts from their new book, ‘Invasive Alien Plants in KZN: Management and Control’. Only those species that are known to occur in Giba are included in this section which provides practical tips on how to control these species. Our conservation management team is also available to help in this regard.
